From the moment your baby is born, it is important to make sure that they receive proper oral care to keep their smile healthy and beautiful. Even before your child gets their first teeth, parents should care for their child’s gums. This is a simple process that can yield great benefits. After your child eats, simply wrap one finger around a damp gauze or washcloth and gently rub it along your child’s gums. Doing so can remove any food particles that are hiding in your child’s mouth, preventing oral damage and promoting good oral health.

When your child’s first tooth starts to peek out, it is time to start using a toothbrush. Be sure to start your child with a baby toothbrush. This can either be a long-handled toothbrush that allows you to brush with your child, or a toothbrush that fits of your finger like a finger puppet. Whatever your choice, be sure the bristles are few and soft. During this time, it is unnecessary to use toothpaste; parents can simply wet the toothbrush with water before brushing. If you child does not like the toothbrush, don’t worry. Use the damp washcloth for a few more months and then try using the toothbrush again.

When your child’s baby teeth start coming in, it is okay to start using toothpaste. Begin with non-fluorinated toothpaste, and only use a small amount. Right from the get-go, have your child practice and get used to spitting out their toothpaste; that way, they can be in the habit of spitting when they start using fluoride toothpaste, which should never be ingested.

At our practice, we want your child to have a healthy smile right from the beginning. By practicing these simple oral health care habits and setting a good example of maintaining good dental hygiene, your child can avoid many oral problems in their life. For more details about how to care for your infant’s smile, we welcome you to call or visit us today.
